이탈리아 출신 기타리스트 알 디 메올라의 곡으로 스튜디오 앨범 'Elegant Gypsy'에 수록되었다. 알 디 메올라와 파코 드 루시아가 연주했는데 스튜디오 앨범 보다는 라이브 앨범 'Friday Night In San Francisco'의 것이 더 좋은 듯 하다. 여기서는 알 디 메올라(Al Di Meola), 존 맥너플린(John McLaughlin), 파코 드 루시아(Paco De Lucia)가 합주했다. 이름을 이렇게 나열했다고 해서 이들을 다 아는 건 아니고, 아는 사람은 알디 메올라 밖에 없다. -_-
알 디 메올라의 앨범을 몇 개 갖고 있지만 대부분 듣기 힘들다. 대신 'Friday Night In San Francisco'는 경쾌해서 들을만 하다.
편집 앨범인 Essential Rarities의 열 번째 트랙의 곡이다. 1970년 시애틀 공연에서 녹음한 버전이다. 짐 모리슨이 쓴 Paris Journal이란 시에 'you die utterly and alone'이란 문장이 있다. 죽음이란 온전히 혼자 겪는 사건이라는 의미이다.

카멜(Camel)은 1971년에 만들어진 영국의 프로그래시브 록 밴드다. 1984년에 발표한 10번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Stationary Traveller'가 유명하다. 곡 전체가 하나의 이야기를 담고 있는데독일이 동독과 서독으로 나뉘어져 있을 때 동독을 떠나 서독으로 온 난민에 대한 내용이다.
앨범과 같은 제목의 이 곡은 5번째 트랙의 곡이다. 수잔 후버 (Susan Hoover), 앤티 라티머(Andy Latimer)가 작곡했다. 동독을 떠난 난민이 서독으로 가기 직전의 심경을 담았다.
다이어 스트레이츠는 마크 노플러(Mark Knopfler)가 1977년에 결성한 영국의 락밴드이다. 마크 노플러는 기타를 피크가 아닌 손가락으로 치는 것으로 유명하다. 블루스롹 연주자이지만 뉴에이지스러운 영화 음악 작곡가로도 유명하다.
이 곡은 다이어 스트레이츠의 대표곡으로 1978년에 데뷰 앨범에 수록되어 히트했다. 술탄(Sultan)은 왕을 뜻하는 아랍권 단어이다.이 노래에서 말하는 'Sultans Of Swing'이 혹시 어떤 클럽이나 빠 이름인가 했는데 밴드의 이름이다. 마크 노플러가 영국의 어느 한적한 술집에서 연주하는 재즈밴드를 봤는데, 그들이 자신들을 술탄스 오브 스윙이라고 소개했다고 한다. 스윙은 재즈 장르 중 하나이다.
최초 번역은 2004년 3월에 했다. 당시는 번역을 뜻만 알기 위해 대충 했었고, 의역보다는 직역을 선호하던 때였다. 그래서 지금 보면 구글 번역기를 돌린 것 같다. 얼마전 누군가 '너무 하네'라는 댓글을 달았길래 이 참에 좀 다듬어서 올린다. (비교하라고 맨 아래 최초 버전도 올린다.)
