1982년 11월에 발매된 같은 이름의 앨범에 수록되었다. 아마도 A면 마지막 곡이었던 것 같다. 음반이 나오고 나서 난리가 났다고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 나 같은 꼬마도 비록 B급 테이프지만 앨범을 샀을 정도니까 말이다. Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller 세 곡이 동시에 히트해서 각종 차트에서 마이클 잭슨과 마이클 잭슨이 경쟁하는 구도였다고 보면 된다. 나 역시 이 세 곡을 테이프가 늘어지도록 들었다. 학교에서는 아이들이 노래를 한글로 적어서 외우기 경쟁을 했다.

뮤직비디오는 앨범 발매 후 3년 뒤에 봤다. 친구 집에서 비디오 샀고, 친구의 형이 뮤직비디오를 구해 놓아서 볼 수 있었다. 그 전에는 뮤직 비디오를 고글 모양의 장난감을 통해서 사진으로 봤다.

설명하자면 이렇다. 마치 '망원경'이나 'VR 고글'처럼 생긴 플라스틱 제품인데, 거기에 눈을 대고 버튼을 누르면 스틸 이미지들이 한장씩 넘어간다. 비슷한 것으로는 사진기 모양의 제품도 있던 것 같다. 여하튼 내가 말하려는 것은 '드릴러'가 얼마나 인기가 있었는지 뮤직비디오를 사진으로 돌려볼 수 있는 장난감까지 나왔을 정도라는 것이다.

뮤직 비디오를 처음 봤을 때의 충격은 뭐랄까. 최초로 3D 영화 '아바타'를 봤을 때의 경악과 같다고 할까. 그때까지 뮤직 비디오라는 건 음악이 나오고, 가수가 이곳 저곳에서 립싱크를 하는 것이었는데, 드릴러는 프롤로그가 있고, 대사가 있고, 특수효과가 있고, 서사가 있는 것이 한 편의 영화를 보는 듯 하다.

최초 가사 번역은 2005년 6월에 했었는데, 이번에 수정을 좀 했다. 그때도 그렇고 지금도 좀 재미있게 하고 싶었다. Thriller는 흔히 우리가 '쓰릴이 있다'에서 er를 붙힌 것으로 '공포를 주는 것'을 뜻하지만 마땅히 번역할 것이 없어 그냥 쓰릴러 라고 했다. 그게 더 재밌는 것 같기도 하다.
