얼마전 문득 장덕이 생각나서 그녀의 노래를 유튜브에서 찾아 듣던 적이 있었다. 그리고 새삼스럽게 알게 된 건 정말로 그녀가 천재였다는 것이다. 15살 즈음 부터 작곡을 해서 죽을 때까지 약 십 여년 동안 그녀가 작곡한 곡은 300곡이 넘는다. 거의 10일에 한 곡씩이다. 더구나 가사를 보면 어린 나이에 쓸 수 있는 수준의 것이 아닌 것들이 많다. 그녀는 대중 가요에 있어 '모차르트' 급이라는 것이 나의 결론이다.
이 곡도 그녀가 20대 중반에 쓴 곡이다. 놀랍지 않은가. 20대가 쓴 '후회'라니 더구나 '뒤늦은 후회' 라니...

1966년 앨범 'Wild is the Wind' 수록곡이다. 4명의 흑인 여자 Aunt Sarah(사라), Saffronia(샤포니아), Sweet Thing(스윗 씽) 그리고 Peaches (피치스) 에 대한 얘기이다.
여자가 백인 남자들에 의해 정체성이 규정지어지는 것을 말하는 내용이다. 맞으면서도 일을 잘하는 아줌마 사라, 백인이 강간하여 흑인 엄마가 낳은 여자는 누렁이라고 하고, 성적 대상은 달콤이 그리고 자신들에게 대드는 여자는 썅년이라고 부른다.
'Sarah(사라)'는 '친절한 곱쓸머리 여자' 이미지가 있는 이름이라고 한다. 'Saffronia(샤포니아)'는 샤프란(Saffron)를 변형한 여자 이름인데 샤프란 꽃이 노랗다고 한다. 그래서 '누렁이'로 번역했다. Peaches 는 '복숭아'라는 뜻인데, 도대체 왜 복숭아라고 하는지 인터넷 여기저기를 뒤져도 알수가 없었다. 그래서 혹시 Bitches 를 순화시킨 말 아닐까 싶어 번역을 '썅년'이라고 했다. 니나 시몬의 노래를 들으면 확실히 그 부분을 좀 뭉개는게 '쌍년'이라고 외치는 느낌이 있다. (고 나는 주장한다.)
