'고속도로의 여왕'은 짐의 여자친구 파멜라를 말한다는 것이 알려진 사실이다. 실상은 뭐 모르지만 말이다. 문득 짐과 팸은 도대체 왜 그모양으로 살았을까 궁금하다. 우리 주변에 가끔 볼 수 있는 그런 커플. "야 그럴려면 헤어져라"라고 말해주고 싶은 그런 커플.
짐도 팸도 각자 다른 연인이 있는데 왜 서로 괴롭히면서 함께 했는지 모르겠다.

5집 Morrison Hotel (앨범 설명은 여기 참조)의 8번 째곡, B면 2번째 곡이다.

영화 '더 도어즈 The Doors'에서 발킬머(짐 모리슨 역)가 흥얼거렸던 노래인데, 어느 장면이었는지 가물가물하다.

'A Spy In the House of Love'는 프랑스 소설가 '아나이스 닌'이 1954년 발표한 소설 제목이다. 나중에 영국에서는 House Of Love로 재발매되었다. 한국에는 이 책을 포함해 그녀의 책이 발매되지 않은 것들이 많다. 어떤 책인지 좀 찾아보다가 짜증이 좀 났지만 자세한 얘긴 안하기로 한다. 어쨌든 가사가 이 소설의 영향을 받았는지 모르겠지만 제목을 그대로 사용하고 있다.

Land Ho! 는 'Land Ahoy!' 혹은 'Land Ahead!'를 말한다. 비행사(파일럿)가 비행을 할 때 갑자기 땅이 보이거나, 항해사가 항해를 하다가 육지를 발견하고 외치는 말이다. 한국말로 대치할 것이 있는지는 모르겠다. 그냥 '전방에 육지!'로 번역했다.

아마도 제목은 작가, 캐서린 앤 포터 (Katherine Anne Porter)의 1962년 소설 '바보들의 배(Ship Of Fools)' (1965년 영화로도 만들어졌다.)에서 가져온 듯 보인다. 첫번째 앨범인 'The Doors'에 있는 'The Crystal Ship (유리로 만든 배)'과 더불어 '배'에 대한 두 번째 노래인데, 마약에 대한 은유가 있다는 지적이 있지만 누가 알겠는가. (songfacts 참조)

이 노래는 가사가 나오기 전에 음악부터 만든 곡이다. 로비가 기타 리프를 만들었는데 이 곡에 넣을 가사를 짐이 내놓지 못했다고 한다. 그러다가 레이가 짐의 공책에서 'Abortion Stories (유산의 이야기들)'이란 시를 찾았고, 짐은 그 시를 갖고 가사를 만들었다. 존 덴스모어에 의하면 짐과 팜에 대한 은유라고 한다. (출처: '여기서는... -  재리 홉킨스, 대니 슈거맨', '라이더스 온 더 스톰 - 존 덴스모어')

짐과 팜 그리고 어려서 목격했던 인디언의 교통 사고 그리고 몇 개의 사건들이 얽힌 가사라고 보는 것이 맞을 듯 하다.
'Blood in the streets in the town of Chicago' 는 1968년 시카고에 있었던 민주당 전당 대회에서의 유혈 사태를 말한다. 어떤 사건인지는 여기를 참조. "Blood in the streets of the town of New Haven"은 1967년에 짐 모리슨이 뉴헤븐에서 체포된 것을 말한다. 무대 뒤에서 여자랑 있는데 경찰이 뭐하냐고 묻자, 아무것도. 라고 대답하자 경찰이 다짜고짜 최루액을 뿌리고, 체포했다는 것이 알려진 사건이다.

도어즈의 다섯 번째 앨범 "Morrison Hotel" - Roadhouse Blues (로드하우스 블루스)


5집 Morrison Hotel (앨범 설명은 여기 참조)의 첫 번째 곡, A면 1번 곡이다.

여기서 말하는 로드하우스는 LA의 'The Topanga Corral'에 있었던 나이트클럽을 말한다. 60년대에 히피들이 모여있었다고. 클럽 뒤쪽에 짐 모리슨과 여자친구 팸이 방갈로를 지으려고까지 했었다고 한다. 나이트클럽은 1983년에 화재로 없어졌다. (자세히 설명하는 동영상은 여기를 참조)

다섯 번째 앨범이 나오고, 1970년 3월에 첫 번째 싱글 앨범인 You Take Me Real의 B면에 실렸고, 빌보드 핫 100에서 50위를 했다. 그 뒤로 라이브 버전이 An American Prayer와 In Concert 그리고 Greatest Hits에 수록되었다.

1966년 8월 부터 1969년 11월까지 작업하고, Electra에서 1970년 2월에 발매한 도어즈의 다섯번째 앨범이다. 다소 산만했던 네번째 앨범 The Soft Parade로 인해 실망했던 마음이 첫째 곡인 Roadhouse Blues를 듣는 순간 싹 씻어지는 기분을 느낀다.

앨범 A면은 하드락 카페, B면은 모리슨 호텔이란 부제목이 달려있다. (CD 세대 이후는 잘 모를 수 있겠다. 과거에 LP(레코드판)이나 카세트로 음악을 듣던 시절에는 매체의 앞면(A면)과 뒷면(B면)에 음악이 나뉘어 실렸고, 각 면의 첫곡이 큰 의미를 갖는 경우가 많았다. 특히 연극의 챕터처럼 각 면을 하나의 테마로 만들기도 했다.) 모리슨 호텔은 'LA의 South Hope Street 1246'에 위치한 작은 호텔이다. 레이와 그의 여자친구인 도로시가 드라이브를 하다가 발견했다고 한다. 하루밤에 2달러 50센트하는 저렴한 곳이었다고. 가계 주인이 사진 촬영을 허락하지 않아 몰래 찍었다고 한다. 지금은 문을 닫았다. 하드락 카페는 사진사였던 헨리 딜츠가 찾은 곳이라 한다.
